Despite India becoming an increasingly prosperous country, there remains a huge gulf between rich and poor with 500 million people – a third of the world’s poor – living in Indian slums. Leprosy is a disease of poverty and more than half of new leprosy cases globally each year are diagnosed in India.

If left untreated, leprosy can lead to terrible disabilities and blindness. Stigma surrounding leprosy remains rife in parts of India with people affected by leprosy frequently cast out by their family, friends, employers and community. Even the beggars in India regularly shun those displaying leprosy-caused disabilities.
