The float represents the African god Yemanja, the queen of the sea. Her mythological significance is tied to the African diaspora created when slaves were brought across the sea to Brazil.

Carnival is an annual competition between samba schools in their respective cities. Performers will dance and sing in full costume as they parade for the judges. Sao Paulo is home to the second largest carnival celebration in Brazil.
