I’ve done this work a couple of years ago with my neighbor Aline. We live in the same village in the mountains of Forez in Auvergne, France. During summertime, every year, she leaves her house to go higher in the mountains with her cattle, her 12 dogs, cats and about 100 hens. From May to October she’ll stay there with no electricity, milking her cows and goats to make cheese. She also sells eggs and blueberries that she harvests around the barn.

Since her husband died, she’s always done this and if she could she’d probably stay there all year long, but the snow doesn’t allow her to do so. She keeps saying she prefers animals to humans anyway, because they never let you down.
