During October in Thailand, the entire country celebrates Nine Emperor Gods Festival, also known as the Vegetarian Festival, a nine day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve on the 9th Lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Temples and deities hold ceremonies to welcome the nine gods over nine days which include acts of self mutilation and daily processions in which fire crackers are thrown at devotees to ward off evil spirits. This culminates in a final procession drawing thousands of believers and filling the town with explosions and gunpowder smoke.
