“In 2008, I visited the local zoo, after not having done it since childhood, and started taking pictures of the captive animals, just like many were doing. My attention kept being drawn to their eyes, which, to me, seemed very sad. After that first visit, I kept going back to the zoo over the next few years to specifically photograph the eyes of the animals. I wanted to explore whether the images would be able to elicit some kind of empathy. What can be seen looking back in the eye that beholds you, something tangible or nothing at all, is for you to decide.”
