Although it is largely neglected by Londoners, Speakers’ Corner has been a London institution for almost 150 years. Outside of Britain it is still widely regarded as the embodiment of the right to speak and assemble freely.
At a time, when the eyes of the world are captivated by the developments in the British parliament, Speakers’ Corner is also once again the scene of passionate debate, not just on the subject of Brexit, but on everything from the world’s religions to the benefits of veganism. But who are the speakers and preachers still climbing onto stepladders or upturned milk crates to voice their opinions, when social media has made it so easy to make one’s views known to a global audience?
