Chongqing | China’s Largest City and Surrounding Area

The gritty fogbound megalopolis of Chongqing is hoped to be the next “Gateway to the West”. The largest city in China and fourth largest municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin, it has a registered population of 31,442,300 (2005). This modern port city is strategically located at the head of the reservoir behind the Three Gorges Dam, and has become the spearhead of China’s effort to develop its western regions and coordinate the resettlement of refugees from the Dam project. This all started in June 1998 with a massive flooding that took place in the summer of 2007. With the completion of this project, its reservoir will bring ocean-going ships to the quays of Chongqing.
