Speaking at the World Economic Forum, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said “there is a need for multilateralism and avoid building of blocks.” Countries in Europe will not be pushed up against the wall to choose between China and America. It is not in the best interest for the Europeans to put all their eggs in one basket. The U.S is no longer the only game in town. Neutrality is the best policy for the Europeans. However, The Americans will find this neutrality troubling. A Western Alliance against China is what the Americans expect.
