In the Gold Standard years t (1880-1914)  the US dollar was backed by gold, like collateral.

Nixon abandoned the conversion system in 1971. Since then, we have increasingly pumped those Benjamin’s out of the presses like muffins out of the oven, on a cold morning, at the town’s donut shop.
