The gig economy will continue to expand, but the so called independent contractors will be paid less. It is financially beneficial for companies not to treat their people as employees. The younger generation has grown up without thinking about rarely switching jobs. They have been brainwashed and forced into not having benefits. Further, gig startup companies have mostly upside with very little downside when it comes to staffing issues.
