“All I know is that the hours are long, under these conditions, and constrain us to beguile them with proceedings which—how shall I say—which may at first sight seem reasonable, until they become a habit. You may say it is to prevent our reason from foundering. No doubt. But has it not long been straying in the night without end of the abyssal depths ? “ Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot
The Saffron Field
The work presented here is at a borderline where documentary work meets plastic photography.
Based in the heart of Brocéliande for about five years, She is taking care of her small farm where She plants spices and herbs.
That year, the saffron field suffered from a delay in flowering. The picking, which remains exclusively being carried out by hand, cannot be done. Waiting and uncertainty set in. This uncertainty gives rise to concern and doubt about what opportunities are given to Her. The future seemed secure and planned – it is not anymore. The human being, who has tried in vain to control nature by organizing it, finds herself unemployed. She has to wait. This flowering that does not come, twilight after twilight, forces Her to accept to play the role of the contemplator only in this cohabitation with the environment.
The saffron flower grows close to the ground. Bending down as close as possible to it is necessary to see the first crocuses to be picked. In the image of Saffron, the photographs are taken in a close-up, as close as possible to the subject and the elements that surround it. The twilight atmosphere is reminiscent of the opening scene of Samuel Beckett’s famous play, where two friends meet at nightfall on a country road to wait for Godot.
