THE IMPERFECT WALL
The perfect wall stands before you, an
impediment throwing you back
on freezing in-your–face
permanence.
Meanwhile,
in parallel, an imperfection,
a flake, say, or a smudge on the paint,
winks at you to disbelieve this.
The coldest notions are cast in forever, like
bondage or the weight of gravity. But water,
often more comforting than not, suggests
passage. Even tears can make us happy.
Yet, walls prevail,
walls protect.
There is danger without walls,
all animals detest danger.
There was a man who built a wall so high
it stopped birds from wanting to fly.
And the Great Wall of China is not so great
if you can’t get in, or out.
‘Stay away! We don’t make cocktails in this
part of town.’
Separation is the essence of a wall,
and we all know we are in love
with separateness.
This is not that
and that is hardly this.
Apartheid is a popular song, always was.
There are walls in buildings and walls in rooms
walls on faces
and walls around gloom.
There are even walls between the words we use.
‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’ And we
all cheered.
So, walls are things despised, too.
But if we need walls, which we seem to,
maybe an imperfect wall is the best we can do.

Twilight Dances by Ron Kozloff is a book of poems that explores the dances between light and darkness, life and death.
The content includes the workings of love, loss, the astute observation of culture, the ephemeral quality of identity, and the mysteries of the psyche.
These poems touched deep emotions in me in places I didn’t know I had due in large part to the quality of the writing.
I would recommend this book to all lovers of modern poetry.
