THE INMATE
White ends to blue at the gate
where the ordeal begins
and plans go dim
under the yawning chest void.
And within,
walls behind walls,
men, in files,
herded monotonously to cages,
glared at, sneered at, terrorized
by the technicians of gloom.
Everywhere barbed wire
encloses the static of despair.
Is this where the world ends?
Yesterday (was it?) I played in a park
beside my girl. There was
a fountain,
children’s laughter.
I don’t remember what happened after,
but it somersaulted me here.
Odd how I didn’t care.
Now it is more clear.
A young lifer told me you do nothing
you become nothing.
Never let them make that stick.
But
I am guilty.
I should suffer
I should have known
I should have…
I read the same words in so many eyes,
men here who, like everyone,
are nearly innocent.
A fatal flaw, a single gesture
and you can’t fix it after.
Then you bake in the oven of incarceration
for…
World, our judges,
keep us here.
We are not like you,
we are inmates.
