The Great Plains of the United States (and the southern Prairies of Canada) are home to more tornado-producing supercells than anywhere else in the world. Over two trips in 2017 and 2018, I chased storms through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and New Mexico with storm-chaser Mike Olbinski who got me to the storms and, more importantly, kept me safe. In July, the storm season moves into Canada and I caught one more storm in Manitoba in the summer of 2017, which I chased on my own. There is nothing quite as awesome as standing under a beautifully-structured supercell in the wide-open spaces of the Great Plains, which is why I will be chasing again in 2023.

Artist statement: I am an avid amateur, and award-winning, photographer. I am a librarian in Toronto but I spend all my vacation time (and disposable income) photographing in Canada and around the world. I was born in South Africa, and have lived in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Malaysia. My love of photography started in my teens when my mother gave me her old Pentax Spotmatic and my parents allowed me to set up a black and white darkroom in our basement where I developed film and made a lot of pretty terrible prints. I switched from film to digital in 2007 and I am thrilled that my work has developed enough since those early days to have garnered awards in international competitions and to be featured in publications in print and online.
