“Depicted in this night (black and white) photograph
(pp.102-103) are two buses cruising the road by
the beach.   Circular light fixtures/poles  on the
sidewalk line up the street and it’s brightness captivates
the viewer’s attention.  Everything in the vicinity
(buildings, street signs, other cars, trees, etc.) complete
a usual scene that seems to show something different
each time I look at it. Great shot!”

The images of Brazil in this book were created in black and white as well as in color, text in English and Italian.  Close ups which dominate the presentation in ‘Ralph Gibson’s Brazil’ provide a different perspective, helping the viewer to change the focus to a new dimension and see more of the culture instead of the tropicality of the place.

Inanimate items seem to come to life in these tight close ups and partial body parts shots still reveal the entire story.

Black and white daily life scenes and portraits bring the viewer closer to the action being depicted while the color photographs play the intensity of color, the blue sky and the heat. They navigate through the pages in perfect harmony, depth and time.

Exploring fragments of buildings, objects, nature and people Ralph shines the light on a side of Brazil that appears minimalist.

Documentary photography from urban and rural areas in addition to historic photographs are also included in this book.

The iconic “calçadão” (the black and white pavement) is depicted under shadows on page 96, an interesting spin on a well-known subject.

Showcasing a massive amount of tight partial close ups with a hint of minimalism this book is a must have for individuals interested in photography as it explores multiple ways to depict a subject.  For individuals interested in Brazil, travel, culture and photography collectors, this book delivers Brazil (refreshed).
