Written by J. B. Hogan
First, it was like a tropical island,
soft, sandy beaches,
shallow, clear blue water
warm against your skin.
Then, it was a Midwest Fall,
some bright crisp days but
clouds blocking the sun,
some chill rain, a hint of snow.
After, nights getting longer, darker,
temperatures dropping sharply,
slipping below zero, heavier snow
worrying the eaves and roof.
Finally, it was life by a frozen sea,
sub-freezing air and no sunrises,
deep, dark nights, no hint of
warmth in an empty house,
just wishing for a seat
maybe on a supply flight
going somewhere with sunlight
leaving sometime yesterday.
