Written by C. J. Anderson-Wu
is to be surprised
by realizing how young
the martyr was
the day he burned himself for
the freedom of speech
You grew up and gradually learned
what it meant to you and your time
Now you’ve passed his age
and continue to get older, and
are surprised how young he was
each time he is remembered
Author’s Note:
Cheng Nan-Jung, a Taiwanese newsletter publisher and advocate for freedom of speech, tragically self-immolated when the police forcibly entered his office to apprehend him in 1989. He was 41 years old.
