Written by Frankie Heartless
Sometimes I see myself as a pile of rags,
Loved by people before my time,
A collection of stories loosely sewn together, inherited against my will,
but still a subject of pride.
I am a patchwork of everyone who ever knew me.
For the first time, I can see my Abuela in my face.
She smiles and tells me to be kinder to myself today.
I work hard like my old music teacher, who taught on his deathbed,
Too passionate to ever stop.
We’re all pushing on, weaving threads together
To connect lives that will meet in our hearts and our words,
but never in person.
I must look so odd, made up of so many patches,
Pre-worn and pre-loved.
I hear myself speak with the intonation of a girl I haven’t seen in years,
But with the intonation of a partner I had in school, the edges fraying with age.
I wonder how people can be like a sheet of linen,
With no memories etched into their eyes,
No needlework tearing up their skin.
Even the dirt under my fingernails was a gift to me,
Storing memories of a little girl who preferred to play in the mud than sit still.
She holds my aching hand and quietly whispers a thank you for carrying all of them with me.
Sometimes I see myself as a pile of rags
And I would not choose to be anything else.
