Let us go then, I and you,
To the bar of the Roaring Donkey,
On the eve of Christmas Eve
There’s a guiding star up in the Heaven shining clear[1]
drinking pints of porter,
Votive offerings of old man for ancient friends.
He said you passed through,
Stopped to talk to him
Don’t offer me mellow wine[2]
and looked in my direction.
I was deep in conversation with his brother.
Missed your passing
Blazing out like the Dog Star through the clouds
All withering fire[3]
as you moved on into the night.
When he told me I chased you
into the street. For a moment
all those years dropping away,
But the night was empty.
The moment gone.
I regret it still.
Maybe God’s good grace knew better,
Left you escape into the dark unconscious
where you always remain.
For if the words I wished
stumbled forth from the heavens,
All would be changed.
Beauty, terrible beauty! Deathless goddess
So she strikes our eyes[4]
Utterly.
