was empty at eight in the morning
heading south to St. Johns
having left I-40 and the
night in Gallup behind.
Shadows crossed over onto the
west side of the road and all was
still save the low rumble of the engine
and the hum of the tires on the smooth road.
St. John’s was about an hour away,
the White Mountains and Show Low
maybe an hour or so further on.
There were stretches of the road so straight
it felt like they would never end and
there were no other cars on the road
in front or even back.
Alone can be a good thing,
something to relish, enjoy,
escaping the day to day, the
hustle, bustle, and stress.
But solitude on 191 was something more,
an empty feeling, slow-growing,
profound, powerful sense
of no one else, no one,
anywhere in the world.
Nearing St. Johns, a lone car,
speeding north, into the emptiness,
and then at last, ahead, the edge of town.
Hustling on southwesterly, then,
toward Show Low, sun at the back,
cars rushing by, following behind,
a shared community, rediscovered,
reestablished in simple human traffic.
