Written by J. B. Hogan
Holiday seasons are happy,
sharing and giving times,
festive days and nights, times
for gathering, feast and drink,
bright lights, crisp air, times
electric, dynamic, creative times
recalling legends, tales, and verse,
times filled with word and symbol
bright notion and shining thought.
But in new year, past holiday times,
past uplifting days and nights, times
slow and dragging, into doldrum
times, chill and gray, with no
spark illuminating drab times,
oppressively dull, dragging times
when landscapes, frozen white,
stretch out far and empty, a time
barren and cold, an empty time
with low heat, no spark nor fire,
simply waiting, waiting in low light,
waiting in the dull gray light,
waiting for a metaphor.
