The internet is a double-edged sword for the heartbroken. It offers solace and strategy in equal measure. Betrayed by an ex? You can easily take your bitterness and frustration online to find like-minded people who share your woes. Want to exact revenge? A group of scorned lovers are ready to plot with you.

Today, a quick online search offers a plethora of resources – blogs brimming with ‘foolproof’ revenge ideas, Reddit threads or Quora answers teeming with tales of petty payback, and online communities where anguished exes gather, instigating you further.

It doesn’t end there. You also have your social media platforms. They have further simplified the act of public shaming or online harassment because of the anonymity offered with the help of fake accounts.

You may wonder, why even go on these forums? But not everyone starts with a sinister plan. Imagine the heartbreak one goes through after being rejected by someone they love. The cocktail of anger, betrayal, and hurt makes one scroll through the communities and explore these ideas, as a way to make them feel better. But deciding actually to plot revenge doesn’t come easy. In fact, several qualitative studies have shown that exerting revenge is a complex phenomenon influenced by various personal, emotional, cognitive, and instrumental factors.

Most members are only looking to find comfort in the company of people who have gone through the same experiences. It just makes you feel you are not alone.

But this can slowly turn into a thirst for vengeance when your focus remains on this negativity, day in and day out.

Joining these revenge communities requires minimal effort. A quick online search and you can find specialized websites for the heartbroken. And of course, you have readily available social media groups. A single click is all it takes for you to become their esteemed member.

These groups often operate with a ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ mentality. Sharing exes’ personal information – phone numbers, addresses – becomes a casual exchange. From helping you annoy your ex to even harassing them, these groups are all in on the action. All you have to do is ask.

For instance, anyone can join a Facebook group established with the sole purpose of getting revenge. On the front, these groups may look like lighthearted communities for sharing petty revenge tactics. But when you connect with other members, they may be willing to go further in your plan of revenge. This is how it all starts.

But some don’t know when to stop, and this is when it gets dangerous. The need for revenge becomes bigger than anything and they slip further into the dark web, literally.

The dark web is a hidden part of the internet accessible only through specialized software, known for its anonymity and illicit activities. It’s often used for illegal transactions, cybercrime, and clandestine communication. Here, the boundaries of legality and ethics dissolve. Services range from ‘revenge hackers’ willing to inflict digital damage to supporting you with any other malicious plans you may have.

The lack of consequences is what gives people confidence. It tends to blur the lines between justified anger and criminal behavior.

Revenge communities may feel like they have all the answers. However, you must take ethical implications into account. At the end of the day, seeking revenge, whether online or offline, can spiral. While revenge can seem sweet, most of them don’t really feel good once it’s done, at least that’s what the research suggests. It often brings more pain than closure. It’s best to focus on healing instead.
