Coffee Study
Chapter #1
The history of coffee dates back to the 15th century, with origins traced to the ancient coffee forests of Ethiopia. Legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee beans when he noticed that his goats became unusually energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. Intrigued, Kaldi shared his findings with local monks, who then used the berries to create a drink that kept them awake during long hours of prayer.
From Ethiopia, coffee spread to the Arabian Peninsula, where it became a staple in Islamic culture. By the 16th century, coffee houses, known as qahveh khaneh, had become popular in cities like Mecca, Cairo, and Istanbul. These coffee houses were not just places to drink coffee but also centers of social interaction, intellectual exchange, and political debate.
Coffee made its way to Europe in the 17th century, initially met with suspicion and even dubbed the “bitter invention of Satan.” However, it quickly gained popularity, leading to the establishment of coffee houses across major European cities. These establishments, often referred to as “penny universities,” became hubs of intellectual discourse, frequented by scholars, artists, and politicians.
