I have lived parties like a wallflower,
not yet ready to blossom and dance.
I have lived blue velvet dresses
and yellow ribbons;
blunt cut fringes and bunches that wilfully
break free.
I have lived the smell of chalk dust and drying paint;
I have lived playdoh and plasticine palaces;
of nipped noses in playgrounds,
and fur-lined parkas, and mittens on strings.
I have lived tapioca steam,
and the sickly-sweet scent of waxed floors
worn by years.
I have lived power-cuts,
and daylight robbery,
and free milk snatched away;
it didn’t bother me.
I have lived patterns and poetry;
travelled to shanty towns
and wandered around;
shaped stories in character;
traced pictures of far-off lands;
committed formulae to memory;
made sense of the world in words.
I have lived concrete jungles;
watched shopping centres rise up
and steel works collapse,
as young enterprises
forge new brands.
I have lived bodyshops,
and alcopops;
taken the stage;
danced on tables;
borne witness;
stolen kisses;
given new songs voice;
made a bold, unpopular choice;
burned with passionate desire,
and fought fire with fire.
I have lived French vineyards
and warm breezy seas;
I have lived an ocean of colourful dreams;
I have created life,
and taken life
by storm.
I have lived parties
and danced until dawn.
