Written by Aaron Hodge

With the multiple shades of summertime hues casting over my Orville Peck-esque attire,

I saunter around secluded towns until my need for adventure expires.

From the looks of it, the townsfolk seem to be zestful with their loud, southern twang;

It must be time to use my trademark charm and do my thang.

The afternoon sun begins to mellow,

Covering the countryside in shades of hot orange and golden yellows.

The majority of the town prepares for their evening routines;

Leaving this adorable couple and me to check out the scenery.

They’re a nice, young pair that I’m grateful to keep me company.

They have this naive, delicate love that reminds me of the man I used to be.

I hate to admit it,

But I often miss that part of me.

The milky moonlight comes peeking through my rest-stop window.

As I write about my achievements of the day, my inner monologue whispers harsh realizations back to me.

“Do you really think you’re some type of Western hero?

All you are is a wannabe vagabond perilously ready to throw his life away.”

It stuns me for a second.

This has been the life I’ve sacrificed everything to pursue.

So how come my brain’s tryna convince me that it never rang true?

I thought I was living the life that I was assigned.

Is it possible that I’ve been playing dress-up for a role that was never mine?

Have I been fooled by my childlike delusions this entire time?
