He was immune to the smell of his own urine
and faeces. He had laid in them for so long.
Unsure if his name was bastard, brat or Bailey.
He only knew gnawing hunger, pain, and violence,
from Sutter the Nutter, known to the police,
the man his mother lived with, his step-
father.
Bailey rarely said ‘mum’ because she never came
when he cried, he had learned to be quiet.
He heard someone crashing through the front door.
Poor Bailey whimpered in fear, but did not cry out.
The policeman found him, thin, filthy, and freezing cold.
He and his partner caught Sutter the Nutter,
it took the strength of three uniformed police officers,
to subdue, cuff him and take him away.
Detective Constable Nixon wrapped the emaciated child
in his jacket, despite the dirt and disgusting smell.
The warmth of the jacket felt safe and secure to Bailey.
DC Pete Nixon was smiling and crying at the same time.
Touched by the child’s condition he promised Bailey,
no-one would hurt him again. He said he would follow
his case, he promised. Of course, Bailey didn’t know
what a promise was, but despite the tears in the man’s eyes,
he was smiling, so a promise couldn’t be all bad, could it?
