They both hit. First the earthquake, then the hurricane.
Standing in the hospital with a sick friend we catch
a glimpse of the end: shaking bed, trembling floor,
rattling IV stand, med bags swinging back and forth.
By Friday black clouds await their moment of fury.
Saturday Van Gogh’s beaten trees come to life.
Fan blades stop mid-cycle, power shuts down abruptly.
The house grows dark as midnight.
My daughter is at a loss. What to do now, she asks.
We have books in the house you know.
But it’s too dark to read. You want me to go blind?
Winds of wrath slam hard against glass.
Trees grow wild, writhing, bending groundward.
Where do birds go in this chaos? Waters rise and roil
like a boiling cauldron. I tell my daughter, get a life.
An inner life – and you’ll never be bored.
How does she think they survived for centuries; they
knew how to occupy themselves without modern
pyrotechnics. Go back to bed and dream because
that may be all the entertainment you’ll get for a while.
You never know, a masterpiece could be lurking
somewhere in the depths of your mind. Mary Shelley’s
Frankenstein was born from a dream. Go back to
bed and see what strange things are gestating.
