Lately I’ve been eating a lot of oranges, a ritual bordering quotidian,
All those slices arranged so meticulously,
A perfect blend of symmetry and asymmetry woven together,
A lesson for us mere humans from nature –
We as a multitude of emotions and thoughts,
Do not need to always fit into a single box.
Orange is such an in-between,
Neither red nor yellow they say,
The one in the middle of the race,
Unsure of his role or his fate,
But how else would one describe these?
Orange is the falling leaves of autumn and crochet sweaters,
The raging inferno and sparkling embers,
It is sunsets and sunrise locked in a molten embrace,
It is dawn keeping the darkness at bay.
A little girl’s toast slathered with marmalade,
An inmate’s vivid jumpsuit that will never see the grass outside those gates,
A can of succulent apricots freshly plucked ,
The wildfire of the forest as it self destructs.
Orange is a paradox.
To the letters that dance and jumble,
And the dyslexic kid who dreams of a day without a stumble,
Orange is a paradox yes,
Orange is the audacity to hope.
