dark clouds hover above my head
ever since I was a kid, pouring down
storm after storm. nothing’s ever worked
at blowing them away, and I’ve tried pretty
much everything. have poured thousands of
gallons of booze down my throat, have smoked
out of aluminum foil pipes, glass pipes, big ass bongs,
have pierced my veins, have burned my nostrils.
for a while, when Emily was around, the sun could
penetrate the black clouds, offering a warm respite.
the day of her funeral, the rain intensified and hasn’t
stopped since. for fourteen years now living under
the storm, drinking, smoking, reminiscing. seeking
comfort in the past, in the madness of drugs, in the
brilliance of inebriation, in the supernal nights of
snow when Emily curled up against me, both of
us high on love and junk. the veins ache for
a final shot, the big OD that this time will
send me straight to the Bar I momentarily saw when I died.
there’s nothing, not here nor there not anywhere and as I
finish the second box of rose wine of the day, I crack
the third one open. my liver’s working overtime and doesn’t
even complain; a hard worker, unlike the rest of my body, and as
I light a cigarette, I wish I had some pot and blow to
sprinkle the bland tobacco with.
