I often wondered about
honest poetry, when I was young and naïve. now, I
know. it’s the kind of poetry that makes
you stop mid-typing a word just to chug a
tall glass of hard liquor, that compels you
constantly to have a lit cigarette in your lips,
dragging and exhaling plumes of smoke
that engulf the room. honest poetry is the
kind that makes you stop writing, that makes you
think “should I write this?”. yes, you fucking
should, especially if you know that you shouldn’t. it’s all
about the pain, the bad moments, the big mistakes,
everything and anything you’ve done. about the
time the needle went through the vein for the first time.
about the time you hugged the wrong girl. about the time you
clocked someone you shouldn’t have, or about the
time you clocked the absolutely right person but the cops refused to
acknowledge it. honest poetry is all about the lines that
come flowing only after a fifth of hard liquor or an 8ball of
something powerful. it’s what comes straight from the heart after the
brain has been numbed. honest poetry is what should make you
run for the liquor cabinet while writing it, lines that
require a fifth of booze before they
can be properly put down.
