crepuscular streets of towns devoid of soul,
meandering about in hopes of catching a glimpse
of someone alive. there’s nothing and I push
forward fueled by two tall cans of Elephant beer.
“is there anyone alive?” I wish to scream but I
keep my mouth shut. I drink, keep on walking, and ghosts
surround me. soon, I’ll be moving away, leaving the town
behind me, finally; the ghosts are still here, around me, whispering
like they’ve always done. nothing’s changed but the crepuscular
streets that remain the same despite the different postal code.
wine in the waterglass, bourbon in the lowball, and tequila in the shot glass.
it’s how I can survive another day, how I keep the blues
at bay as the famished mongrels stare at me through the mist
encapsulating the clearing wherein I sit.
does anything make sense? for me, the last time was when I was nineteen
and the needle penetrated my vein for the first time. ever
since, I’ve just been ambling about, looking for a fix as strong
as her kisses.
