These images were taken in an area of ancient woodland bordering the River Nevern in Pembrokeshire, UK. It is a mystical and spiritual place standing just below the Presilli Hills where the bluestone reputedly used to build Stonehenge came from, it is surrounded by ancient burial grounds, an Iron Age village and standing stones which all add to its mystery and history.
Walking through the dense canopy of woodland accompanied by Red Kites and Buzzards overhead and the sound of rushing water from the Nevern I feel a sense of calm and reassurance, this place has been lying mostly undisturbed by man for over 400 years….. and I truly hope that will continue indefinitely.
By using a combination of multiple exposure, slow shutter speed, and ICM (intentional camera movement) photography I have endeavored to bring the spirit of the woodland through. Most of these images were taken in Autumn (Fall) when the trees have transitioned from their vibrant greens to golden yellows and hazy purples and the branches release their leaves to reveal the skeletal structure below.
I originally trained as a textile designer and initially used photography along with drawings and paintings to capture ideas for designs. When digital photography came along it opened up so many opportunities to use the camera in more abstract and creative ways and I embraced the opportunity to push the boundaries and experiment with new ways of making images with a more personal and emotional energy.
