Pain is a boon companion,
always with us, reminder of
our humanity, vulnerability,
keeping us honest and humble.
Pain is a close confidant,
whispering to us about
limitations, levels, loss,
perpetual notice that we
are present, active and aware.
Pain is a secret priest,
a hooded, hidden cleric,
conducting an early service,
first rites, in recognition of
painless time to come, when it will
no longer be there, no longer required –
fading suggestion of enduring life.
