Here lies Earth, buried in herself
Hoping she’ll have more mourners than she did caretakers.
Tramping over brush, boots come down on broken branches from high oaks.
Green leaves linger on the forest floor; it’s almost autumn for corm oaks.
The wind whips icy: the north wind pilgrimage down to the canopies.
I’m thankful for the woods around me, soldiers fighting off a storm: oaks.
I see a squirrel swing dexterous from branch to mighty trunk, rustling and shivering
from the cold. Its mouth is thick-stuffed with a hundred nuts from warm oaks.
My coat is tight around me, but I try to pull it tighter. Surrounding green and
brown and blue I have a heat desire. I’m obliged by this a grand swarm oaks
that hide something like a deer darting across my path. I jump at the squashing
sound of hooves on dirt and bug and stick. Now it is hidden, its form oaks.
I go to follow the proud and sacred creature, and see a sight so humbling
of beige in a blue brown wood. She says to me, “Brady, behold my home: oaks.”
