The message promises much,
but don’t open it yet, let
the inevitable disappointment
remain unrealised for the moment.
There is faith and loss too in
the more sure promise of
forgetfulness and of pain
the crate of beer offers,
the whisky, this holiday weekend.
Cheaper than that of the flesh
which aches to be pierced, too.
To bleed, to offer itself as a
sacrifice to a more common
sort of love.
