Written by J. B. Hogan
First sight along the banks
of swift flowing, shallow water;
quick forming, slow growing,
fits and starts, missteps mistaken.
Surprised into closeness,
jumpstarted with music,
in outdoor shows –
unexpected warmth and comfort.
Quickly stalled, not with rancor,
but in foreknowledge of future failure;
forced reconnection through
ties of sound and word.
Six months or more then passing
level keel maintained throughout,
but by river once more, brief
reopening in moonless night.
Anticipation followed, awaiting
once more in outdoor shows;
unexpected contact with burning heat
fast, cut off, stopped again.
A final bivouac at fall’s edge
doors opened falsely a final time;
one last interchange, awareness dawned,
halo of misunderstanding broken –
true end at last attained.
