A brand new season is upon us
The garden plot calls out to me
I’ve done the heavy, needed tilling
And with the rake made plane the rows
It’s time to dig the little trenches
And sow the tiny, precious seeds
Each one a waiting, dormant wonder
A reminder that life conquers death
I follow all the established guidelines
And gently place them close apart
But as I do, I sense the tension
Knowing that if they all sprout
There won’t be space upon the row-hill
And I’ll have to rip some out
With that thought, I’ve lost my fervor
For to me it seems such a waste
To kill when I prefer conserving
It leaves me with a bitter taste
For I long to choose compassion
Instead of just: “it’s what makes sense”
Why does that little seedling merit
To have its life so cruelly end
Cast aside, shrivelled, trod on
It’s life snuffed out above ground?
But deep inside, I know the threat
That sparing all sprouts will produce
For as they grow they’ll choke each other
And faint hope of fruit reduce.
So when it’s time and logic prevails
I tear those saplings from their home
And know that it is for the best
To give a chance to all the rest.
