Series Inspiration

That feeling of going home, a warm comfortable feeling when you get on the bus, thank the driver for just being there, and then move on down inside. Upper deck, lower deck, window seat, aisle seat or shall I just stand tonight? Emotions revealed as passengers look out of the window, quietly into space. Dreaming of home, a good day at work, a bad day who really knows …

I made these pictures in the winter, whilst standing at a bus stop in north London. I stood close by, trying to engage in their dreams, trying to feel what they were feeling, understanding their hidden stories. As they get off the bus Londoners say “Thank you driver”, this time for getting me safely home.

After a successful international career in fashion, fine- art photographer Stephen Sunnucks made the decision to focus his time on his art and has never regretted the change. 

Stephen has always found himself drawn to the themes of “identity, abandonment, and the sea”, particularly in the streets of London and the English sea-side towns that represent a large part of his youth. 

Stephen’s distinctive photographs, frequently stripped of excessive detail, reflect his intuitive presentness, often revealing hidden emotions or untold stories, moments of time captured by his keen eye. 

As a mental-health sufferer, Stephen also co-founded My Minds-Eye, a photographic workshop programme designed to help give confidence and purpose back to fellow sufferers through the medium of photography.
