THE SYNTHESIS OF OPPOSITES
by Elisabetta Bacchin
EGOSISTEMI illustrates the artistic career of Marcello Vigoni, covering a time span ranging from 2017 to today. In it, works relating to three major projects dialogue: “Landscapes from the unconscious”, which investigates the encounter/clash between man and nature, “Multiverso”, which has as its starting point the concept that an image can open up to unlimited interpretative possibilities, and “Please Save Devero”, dedicated to the protection of Alpe Devero, near Milan. These projects are the result of the exploration of concepts that gravitate around philosophy, biocentrism, spirituality, ethics and the concept of the human utilitarian view.
In Vigoni’s works, the gaze is focused in particular on the processes of appropriation of the environment by man, who is increasingly alien to nature. According to the artist’s conception, man is incapable of observing a place enjoying its fullness and its simple existence but, on the contrary, the need to break down the world and label it, understand it in order to come to possess it, is inherent in us. No longer ecosystems, therefore, but EGOsystems, in which human interests prevail over nature. And yet, in the chosen works this sort of protest against an increasingly fragmented world takes on the tones of poetry and we find ourselves observing nature with a sense of sweet nostalgia, because it represents a part that, even if buried, is part of us in an indelible way.
In the artist’s works, atavistic scenarios merge with images of everyday urban life, creating settings that arise from the unconscious, of deep inner research. Dreamlike places where real stories come to life in which everything seems suspended and which transport us to a timeless dimension. There is a calm feeling of calm that accompanies the visual story, interrupting the chaotic flow of everyday life, capturing the senses and leading the viewer into a parallel world.
Drawing inspiration from Heraclitus’ thought, according to which harmony is nothing more than a synthesis of opposites, Vigoni investigates them and inserts them into a fertile dialogue: present and infinite, real and unreal, light and shadow, are all antithetical poles and, at the same time, synthesis of the same reality. This “poetics of opposites”, as we could define it, has reminiscences in the conceptual operation that Magritte put in place in creating paradoxical and unusual combinations, often identifiable only by a second and more careful observation, which lead to reflect on the boundaries of reality: what is true and what is fiction? Where is the dividing line?
Marcello Vigoni was born in 1979 in Milan, where he lives and works. His artistic career took its first steps in the world of advertising and graphics, then continued on two parallel tracks: on the one hand the world of communication (which led him in 2006 to found the 2006 to the founding of the TLS agency, with which he will realise national and international advertising campaigns, and to the conception and realisation of events as Art Director), on the other hand that of photography, understood not only as technical experimentation, but rather as constant research of expression. Photography - preferred in its black and white analogue form - is in fact used by the artist not so much to reproduce reality as to investigate it beyond the boundaries of the ‘visible’, revealing a world that seems to spring directly from his mind. In his works, characterised by a surreal and metaphysical inspiration, a dreamlike universe takes shape that dialogues with the observer, putting him in direct contact with his own subconscious and memories. His are introspective images full of a cultured and refined symbology, the result of tireless research and studies that the artist carries out on a daily basis. Vigoni loves to investigate opposites and put them in contact to create a connection and narrate the reality in which we live. His poetics is characterised above all by research into social issues cultural, philosophical and ethical issues concerning man’s not always easy relationship with nature, immersed as we are in an increasingly neurotic, fragmented and technological society. His latest research also investigates the theme of the human figure through portraits and nudes. Vigoni has numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Italy and has received numerous recognitions, including international ones.

There is a strong sense of balance here, between beauty and unease, control and fragility. I admire the restraint and the depth of thought behind these images.
