The 1951 Refugee Convention was created after World War II. One hundred and forty-nine countries agreed to ensure right to asylum for anyone fleeing persecution.
I hear you above the blaze of
Media stereotypes
Political scaremongering
Your small voice a whisper
Drowning in the rampage.
I see you in the blur of
Distant family, friends,
Home, possessions
Left behind with tears
Buried in a search for safety.
I smell your fear over
Thousands of travelled miles
Alone, alone and frightened
Hope a weak faded flame
Wrestling for life’s fragment.
I taste the despair of
Living in limbo, waiting;
Waiting for decisions, not
Knowing, not planning
Barely living at all.
I touch your ravaged, shaking
Shoulders wracked with terror
Nightmares haunt your sleep
Flashbacks shape waking hours
You are a fifteen-year-old boy.
I read the 1951 Refugee Convention
Created after World War II.
