Lisbon is a city of contrasts that somehow feel perfectly at ease with one another. Steep hills lead to quiet neighborhoods, historic architecture stands alongside modern infrastructure, and everyday moments unfold against a backdrop of remarkable color and light.
Created during a trip to Lisbon in April 2023, this series explores the city through architecture, street life, and landscape. My approach emphasizes graphic composition, geometry, and color while staying attentive to the small moments that give a place its character.
Rather than focusing only on landmarks, these photographs aim to capture the feeling of Lisbon, including the warmth of its residents, the texture of its streets, the iconic yellow trams, and the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Together, the images reflect a city that feels both vibrant and approachable.

ARTIST STATEMENT Travel photography gives me an excuse to be endlessly curious. While famous landmarks are often part of the story, I'm usually just as interested in the details around them—the way light falls on a building, the geometry of a street, a brief interaction between strangers, or the everyday moments that reveal something about a place and its people. My photographic style is often described as graphical. I'm drawn to strong composition, shape, color, and structure, but I also want my images to feel connected to the people and cultures that make a destination unique. Whether I'm photographing landscapes, city streets, food, or architecture, my goal is to create photographs that encourage viewers to slow down, look a little longer, and experience a place beyond the postcard version of it. For me, Lisbon was exactly that kind of city: visually rich, welcoming, and full of small surprises around every corner. It's a place where history, modern life, and community all seem to coexist naturally, making it a joy to explore with a camera. BIOGRAPHY Based in Columbus, Ohio, Jen Batey specializes in travel, landscape, and architectural photography. With more than 20 years of experience behind the camera, she has traveled to over 35 countries documenting the people, places, and cultures that make each destination unique. Known for her graphical approach to composition, Jen creates images that emphasize light, structure, color, and visual storytelling. Her work spans travel, street, landscape, architectural, and culinary photography, combining a love of exploration with a genuine curiosity about the world and the people who inhabit it. Her photographs have received recognition in numerous national and international competitions, including multiple Platinum and Gold honors in the London Photography Awards last month. Through her work, Jen hopes to inspire curiosity, connection, and a deeper appreciation for the places we share.
