Flash Fiction by LB Sedlacek

It’s not that hard to catch a spider, even though I hate them. We live in the woods. We have all kinds.
Little green ones. The good ones – Daddy Long Legs. Ugly gray wolf spiders. Creepy dark black ones. White and green ones. Tiny ones.
So many. It would only take one.
I stared at my jars. I had punched air holes in the caps.

I waited until night after my husband went to work at his third shift factory job. I had seven hours give or take.
I made the drive in two hours. Opened the back side window with a crowbar and unleashed the spiders. Two hours to drive back. One hour to spare.
I was curled up in the bed and feigning sleep when I heard my husband’s truck pull into the driveway. I popped on my sleep mask, popped in some ear plugs, took a deep breath, sighed and went to sleep.

It was two maybe three weeks later, when I saw a post on social media. Man dies from spider bite.
I smiled. A little spider had taken down the Boss who’d threatened me, threw things at me, and tried to run me over when the Board ousted him and gave me his job.
No more looking out the window to see him hiding in a bush by the little motel, with a bottle and binoculars in hand. No more ugly emails. No more hounding Board members. Non-profit work is hard enough!
