The photographs that shape this project reflect a complex image, one that depicts Myanmar culture. It is a view both saturated with light and held in shadow, a portrait of a place and of its people. In the photographs we see the light that defines these people and their diverse landscape. A light that is both diFused and direct, its spectrum expressed in the photographs of the sacred, as well as in the secular aspects of their society.
Through their descriptive and emotional capacity, the photographs indicate the importance of light and shadow to the defining of place. Within the images that form this narrative we see a photographer noting the exotic, but concentrating on the familiar, on the everyday existence of the Myanmar people; their daily journeys, both quiet and chaotic, and the labor performed to maintain their lives. Through these observations on the everyday aFairs of the people pictured, the photographer has discovered beauty and grace.
Embedded into the project are also the compelling portraits of its youth, perhaps foretellers of Myanmar’s future.
It is through photographs such as these that we see clues to understanding the vibrant and intricately woven culture of the Myanmar people, and the physical and spiritual landscape of the county of Myanmar.
