We are proud to introduce Photography Beyond The Lens, our new reader-supported exploration of the connections between photography and the human experience — behaviour, psychology, society, history, and culture.
Your contributions help us maintain an independent platform dedicated to promoting storytellers from around the world.
Thank you for supporting our mission and being part of our journey.

In 1839, only months after the invention of photography was announced to the world, a chemist named Robert Cornelius stood outside his family’s lamp workshop in Philadelphia, removed the lens cap of his camera, and waited. The exposure took several minutes. He had to remain perfectly still. When the image was developed, it revealed something revolutionary: a person had intentionally created a photographic image of himself.

More than 170 years later, billions of people repeat that same act every day with a smartphone held at arm’s length. The technology changed dramatically, but the human desire remained remarkably consistent: to preserve a presence, communicate identity, and declare, “I was here.”

The selfie is often considered a product of the digital age, but its roots extend deep into the history of visual culture. Before cameras existed, rulers, artists, and ordinary people used painted self-portraits to shape how they were remembered. The self-image was never only about appearance; it was about status, identity, memory, and control over one’s own story.

“350 words to go. A donation keeps you reading and supports our independence. Thank you!”
