For thousands of years, humans have searched for ways to remain connected with those who are gone. Before photography existed, civilizations carved names into stone, painted portraits, built monuments, and preserved objects belonging to the dead. When photography arrived in the nineteenth century, humanity gained a new way to maintain that connection: capturing the appearance of a person and allowing their presence to continue through an image.

Photography transformed remembrance from something created only by rulers, artists, or religious institutions into something ordinary families could preserve. A photograph could sit inside a home, carried through generations, becoming a personal doorway into the past.

Across cultures, photographs of deceased relatives have often been more than records of appearance. They have served as objects of memory, family identity, spiritual connection, and cultural continuity.

In Mexico, the tradition surrounding Día de los Muertos demonstrates how images participate in relationships between the living and the dead. Families commonly display photographs of deceased relatives on home altars, or ofrendas, alongside flowers, candles, food, and personal belongings. The photograph does not represent an absence; it represents a continuing relationship between generations.
