This project is an exploration of the inner silence and intimacy hidden behind the everyday reality of motherhood. Inspired by the chiaroscuro aesthetics of old masters’ museum paintings and historical cinema, I wanted to move away from perfect, textbook templates in family photography. The series features an ordinary young family in a conventional home environment.

Limiting myself strictly to natural light from a window, I dissolved home details into deep shadows, transforming the room into a timeless space. The accentuating lines of the bodies and the texture of their skin turned routine family moments into eternal stories of unconditional connection. A vintage Soviet manual lens (Helios 44) allowed me to achieve a raw, painterly texture without digital, plastic sterility, while the lens flares only enhanced the painterly character of the images. The poses of the mother holding her baby evoke the eternal biblical image of the Madonna, portraying motherhood not as a glossy, superficial joy, but as a sacred, ancient mystery of protection and vulnerability. The appearance of the father in the deep shadows does not disrupt the intimacy of the series; instead, it creates a protective shield around the mother and child.

Ekaterina Grutsa lives and works in Belarus. She became captivated by photography seven years ago. As a self-taught photographer, she deliberately focuses on fine art and documentary photography, preferring to work with vintage manual lenses to create raw, tactile imagery. She loves finding light even where it seemingly does not exist, proving to her subjects that a simple home environment is not an obstacle to art, but an essential part of it. Her primary interest lies in capturing the unique DNA of a human being, honest and imperfect beauty, aging, and authentic human destinies.
