With great trust Katherine allowed me to photograph her and in exchange I wanted to convey my admiration for her female form. I wanted to explore a fresh view of the female nude — not the traditional view of the male gaze, nor through the harsh eyes that are accustomed to extremely rigid standards of beauty. This female nude is an object of wonder — fluid, sensual and strong. Showing her strength and vulnerability as a mode of self identification rather than an abstract perception of the right way to look.

Katerina Stratos is a multi-disciplined photographer, designer and filmmaker based in Sydney, Australia. 

She has received a BA in Visual Communication Design, majoring in photography from the University of Technology, Sydney. Following several years working as a graphic designer and illustrator, Katerina attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School where she completed a post graduate course in production design for film. This led to working with the director Baz Luhrmann, where she was introduced to concept art and the notion of previsualizing scenes to facilitate a distinct visual style. This particular combination of creative experiences have brought her to her current practice, melding together photography, digital illustration, set design, graphic design, storytelling and film. 

Katerina’s art practice is focused on a strong sense of narrative and creating immersive worlds within her images. She has a strong feminine perspective and is most interested in creating images with a compelling female voice. Outside her art practice she works as a concept artist and graphic artist to previsualise ideas for filmmakers in the development stages of their film projects.

Her work has been exhibited at the Aperture Gallery, New York; Spazio Labo’ Gallery in Bologna, Italy. Her photographic work has been published in two books accompanying the above exhibitions; two issues of FAYN magazine published in Los Angeles; 805 Lit + Art digital literature magazine; RUSSH independent fashion magazine. She was a finalist twice in the Lens Culture awards: 2026 Street Photography Awards and 2019 Black and White Photography Awards.
