Park Missionaries is a series of impromptu portraits of missionaries from the Church of the Latter Day Saints, also known as Mormons. As I am not a member of this religion, the photographs began as a response to being approached by missionaries in public spaces, while I already had my camera with me. In exchange for a conversation about Jesus Christ, I could take their photograph. The series digressed from being reactionary and became an exploration of the subjects’ experiences as missionaries, the conversations becoming slowly more personal, and soon, I began approaching the missionaries that I happened upon in public. Additionally, I was raised Catholic and am interested in exploring a variety of Christian denominations through portraiture.
Jillian Abir MacMaster is a Palestinian-American photographic artist from Frederick, Maryland. She utilizes portraiture and cyanotype processes to explore religion, family, immigration, and LGBTQ+ experiences. She holds a BFA in photography from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
