We are proud to introduce Photography Beyond The Lens, our new reader-supported exploration of the connections between photography and the human experience — behaviour, psychology, society, history, and culture. Your contributions help us maintain an independent platform dedicated to promoting storytellers from around the world. Thank you for supporting our mission and being part of our journey.
In 1833, William Henry Fox Talbot stood at Lake Como with a camera lucida, frustrated that his hand could not reproduce what his eyes were seeing. He remembered the camera obscura, in which light projected the outside world onto a surface, and imagined something remarkable: a way for the image to make its own permanent record. Photography emerged partly from this desire to preserve what appeared before the eye.
But there was a problem hidden inside that ambition. What exactly is it that the eye sees?
Philosophers have wrestled with this question for centuries. If perception can be fooled by an illusion, then seeing something does not necessarily mean encountering reality directly. The philosophical problem of perception asks how our experience can give us knowledge of a world that exists independently of our perception.
Photography adds another layer to the problem because a photograph looks like evidence. It appears to have a physical connection to something that stood in front of a lens. That connection gives photographs an authority that paintings traditionally did not possess. Yet the camera does not preserve everything that happened. It selects a position, a moment, a frame, a distance and a particular arrangement of light. “326 words to go. A donation keeps you reading and supports our independence. Thank you!”
