Nika Sandler’s “The World of Hedonia” explores pleasure, emotional escape, and depressive hedonia through conceptual still lifes and constructed environments. Inspired by personal experiences and Mark Fisher’s idea of depressive hedonia from “Capitalist Realism,” the series reflects the search for pleasure as a form of avoidance. Objects, substances, and a recurring doll figure act as symbols of seduction, discomfort, and alter ego. Sandler combines conceptual art and staged photography to examine emotional states connected to escape and self-forgetting.
